About Our Organization
ABOUT AIDS ARMS, INC.
AIDS Arms, Inc. was founded in 1986 because:
-Few AIDS specific resources existed
-Something had to be done to ensure AIDS-diagnosed individuals had access to care
-AIDS Arms began as a sponsored project of the Community Council of Greater Dallas (CCGD)
-AIDS Arms then emerged from sponsorship as an independent Agency in March 1990
2002 – AIDS Arms received the Center for Nonprofit Management’s Excellence in Mission Achievement Award
2007 – United Way’s (UW) Stewardship Committee ranked AIDS Arms with a number one rating
The purpose of AIDS Arms, Inc. is to assist individuals in accessing the healthcare, resources and support necessary to successfully manage the challenges of living with HIV/AIDS. Our mission is achieved through the following operating goals:
To empower people through effective case management programs that include education, counseling, referral, advocacy, long range planning, creative problem solving and coordination of services with other service providers
To provide quality, accessible outpatient care and treatment that meets the comprehensive medical needs of HIV+ individuals
To maintain a close relationship with clients; their families and caregivers that adapts to their changing HIV needs
To reduce barriers to HIV care and increase community-wide partnerships among medical and psychosocial service providers.
ABOUT LifeWalk
LifeWalk began in 1990 as a way to raise unrestricted funds for AIDS Arms, Inc.
LifeWalk contiues to support the following:
-Operation of the only HIV-specific medical facility in South Dallas
-Services provided to more than 11,500 HIV+ individuals since inception
-Operations with a staff of 76+ and an annual operating budget of more than $6.7 million
Why we still walk:
-Dallas has experienced a 21% increase in known HIV infections since 2001
-Dallas is the third largest city and the second highest HIV infection rate of any city in Texas
-AIDS Arms, Inc. connects 75% of all new HIV diagnoses in the North Texas area to medical care and services
-In the Dallas Metroplex, approximately 20,000 are currently living with HIV/AIDS
-In 2007, there were 1313 new infections in Dallas
-There are 50,000 to 60,000 new infections in the U.S. each year
